How are you really doing right now?
With everything that is happening in the world at the moment, it is completely natural if you are feeling fear, overwhelm, or restlessness. I know exactly what that can feel like: you are often there for others, holding space, listening, functioning. But who holds you when everything feels like too much?
Today I want to share a beautiful exercise with you that can help you feel supported and safe again. It’s called the Containment Hug and comes from trauma expert Peter Levine.
🫂 A Containment Hug means consciously hugging yourself for a moment. Place one arm under the opposite armpit or along your ribs, and the other arm over the opposite shoulder or upper arm, so that your chest is gently held — as if you were both hugging and holding yourself at the same time. You can also simply hug yourself in whatever way feels most natural to you.
Then begin to gently and slowly sway or rock your body from side to side or forward and back. Keep breathing calmly and notice the contact of your hands and arms. Stay in this embrace for a few minutes and allow your body to slowly settle again.
You see, it doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple, conscious hug and gentle rhythmic rocking can help your nervous system regulate and signal to your body: I am safe. ✨
If you would like to learn more tools like this and integrate them into your daily life or your teaching, we begin this Friday:
