The Summer Solstice is no ordinary day. It marks the longest day of the year, the highest position of the sun, and a powerful turning point in the yearly cycle.
It is a time to pause, to feel gratitude, and to consciously turn towards the light – both within and around us.
In this spirit, I would like to share with you one of the oldest and most well-known mantras of the yogic tradition: the Gayatri Mantra.
It originates from the Ṛg Veda (Rigveda) and is dated to approximately the 2nd millennium BCE. The mantra is dedicated to Savitṛ – the sun as a visible manifestation of the Divine – and reminds us that the light is always there, even when it is sometimes covered by clouds.
The Gayatri Mantra
Om bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ
tat savitur vareṇyaṁ
bhargo devasya dhīmahi
dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt
We meditate upon the divine light of the sun, the source of all life. May this light illuminate our hearts and inspire our minds.
The time around the Summer Solstice carries a very special energy. Whatever we place our attention on has the potential to grow and unfold. That is why I invite you to join me tomorrow in celebrating this special moment together.
We will create a sacred space with asana, pranayama, meditation, and the chanting of the Gayatri Mantra as well as Surya mantras (Surya = sun), to connect with light, life force, and our inner sun.
